Intro to Swimming
What is Swimming?
Swimming is pushing your body forward by using your arms, legs, or body. Swimming is a sport and can be used in life-threatening situations, although you can also swim for fun.
Things to Know
There are specific things to learn when you swim, besides learning how to swim. Most of these are really only needed when swimming in a competition, but knowing how to do them can be beneficial.
- Diving
This is used at swim competitions, where swimmers dive off blocks into the water. has a special dive. Warning: doing dives, if you don't have good technique, there's a big chance they will be painful. Also, a lot of pools won't allow you to dive into them, so only dive into pools you are allowed to dive in.
- Turns
There are many types of turns used, but the two main types are flip turns and open turns. Flip turns are just like the name: you flip, turn, and push. Open turns, while still open, are a little different. You only touch the wall (or whatever you are pushing off of), and turn to your side, and push off, moving your arms to the side of your head and joining them together. Note: backstroke usually uses a flip turn, except you do an extra turn to prepare for it (turning over and doing a regualr flip turn).
